He Makes Me Lie Down: The Gift and Practice of Sabbath with Mark Buchanan

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Thursday 10/7/2021, 4:00 PM (Eastern)

He makes me lie down. This may be David’s deepest insight into the heart of God: a God so intent on our flourishing that his first gift to us is rest. Before God calls us to action, he summons us to stillness. He quiets us with his love. He restores our souls.

This is captured in God’s gift of Sabbath. Sabbath is more than a day. It is a place of abundance and overflow, a place where we rest from our own striving and rest in God’s bounty and goodness. It is a place of renewal and orientation from which all our work and activity flows.

In this workshop, author and professor Mark Buchanan (author of  The Rest of God: Restoring Your Soul by Restoring Sabbath) will explore both the gift and the practice of Sabbath. We will look at Sabbath biblically, historically, theologically – but, above all, practically. Participants will come away with sense of the richness of the ancient practice of Sabbath-keeping, and with fresh motivation and strategies to live from the Sabbath.

Mitzi Mak

Selah-West Faculty

Mitzi started her professional life as a high school social studies teacher. She and her husband Jerry then served cross-culturally for ten+ years, living abroad first in India and then Kurdistan, N. Iraq. In addition to being a Spiritual Director, she now serves as a Formation and Care pastor in her local church in Houston, TX. She has graduated from LTI’s Selah Spiritual Direction training as well as LTI’s Emmaus Formational Leadership Program.

Mitzi enjoys engaging conversation, reading fiction, doing jigsaw/crossword puzzles, ocean gazing and exploring the world with Jerry through food and travel.

God has two main callings in Mitzi’s life: to care for those who care for others and to be a guide in helping others have a healthy relationship with the Trinity – recognizing God’s loving presence and activity in their lives and how to faithfully respond.

Selah was a transformative experience for me – allowing the contemplative within to emerge and to beautifully co-exist with my extraverted personality.
